PERUTTU – Jesse Markin
Jesse Ekow Awir Markin is a Liberian-born singer-songwriter from Finland. He grew up in a small town called Viljakkala. With a population of 2500 there was not much a young black boy could do without attracting some unwanted attention in this tiny northwestern town. He looked different and felt different. This environment contributed greatly to an identity crisis, as Markin always attempted to find things that reflected his internal world and struggles. At a very young age Markin made a conscious decision to do things differently.
Markin fell in love with rap music at the age of twelve and it changed everything. For 12 years Markin was part of the hip hop group The Megaphone State, who produced three critically acclaimed hip-hop albums. Even though rap was where it all started, Markin started to feel that there’s also more to music. With his solo project Markin takes leaps forward both musically and thematically, broadening his style from rapping to singing for the first time.
